Eames Chairs: Real or Replica?

image via estmagazine
Hello bloggers!
How's everyone's weekend? Hope you all have a great weekend!

Last Friday I blogged about how much I love Josh and Jenna dining room with the trendy eames chairs as the focal point for the dining room. On Sunday, I was popping out to my local Officeworks and guess what I saw?! The exact Eames DSW side chair, selling for a mere $39!! well, perhaps it's not the exact same one as what Jenna and Josh used (because they used the Eiffel DSR eames chair).

The more popular this chairs are, the more mass-reproduction/replica ones out there. For me, it starting to lose its exclusiveness as it is become more and more accessible and cheaper to the public. Eames chairs are famous for its timeless beauty, its rarity and hefty price tag (Just like a Chanel bag ;p)

Moreover, when I checked out Officeworks website, it actually on sale online for $19 @_@ (I'm starting to wonder how much does it actually cost to manufacture it?!).

I have seen the real one, the good replica and a bad replica of this chair, and what Officeworks sell is just right smack down in the middle between the good and bad replica quality. For those who want's the looks but not the sturdiness nor the price tag, this is the one for you. It's looks good from a far, but when you touch it and inspect it more closely, it far off from being perfect.

Here's a review on real vs replica from EST magazine

I have always love the Eames chair and actually was thinking of buying one for myself too. But with the original come with a hefty price tag of +$500 and the replica being only a fraction of the price +$79 at Matt Blatt: it gets me thinking on whether or not buying a replica is actually worth it?

What do you think bloggers? Yay or Nay for Replica Eames Chair?

PS: I was planning to blog all my 'Royal show' weekend adventures first thing on Monday, but unfortunately my laptop decided to die on me. It has the 'BSD' - Blue Screen of Death. Yes, the blue screen that appear when you just started in your laptop that telling you that the hard-drive is failing ... was failing ... has failed.

Oh well ... hopefully it will fixed itself out soon .... T___T

Have a good day bloggers!

  1. Hi there.
Look, if you love the Ray and Charles Eames design, of course you'll pay attention to details. But they came from a period of time where design pretended to be massive, easy made, and to be in every house. If you ask any people living in those years, they'll tell you that Eames, Saarinen, and all of those designers products, weren't the top designs. They were cheap.
If you analyze the VW Beetle, it comes the same way. Today's replicas, keeps the industrial principle they pretend on the begining. This companies that bought the original designs, they are selling them at an incredibly unaffordable price. Yet, nor Ray or Charles are contributing to the design. They are not supervising the production. So, if you want the original, you'll have to dig and find an old used one, that will not be in a very nice condition, only if you steal it from a collector lol XD.
I recomend you buying the replica. Do not contribute to this elitist way to think modern design as design for a fez. Modern design was inspired to get into every house, every person. A good replica is still a very nice chair, and the design will always be present.

  3. @Buenosindies: Thanks for your input on this one! WOW, I never really see it that way. Now that you mention it, it kinda true in a way. I personally don't mind buying replica because as you say Original is quite hard to come by these days. But a shout out to you for your feedback!! Totally appreciated! Made me seeing the over the top price tag a total waste of money :)

  4. Hello,
nice to read an article about the diffrences in original and replica productions.
however, as Buenosindies said, it sucks that Vitra and Herman Miller want you to pay up to 6000$ and more for an Eames Lounge Chair even if thats NOT in the spirit of Charles and Ray Eames.
They wanted high quality furniture, affortable for the most of the people and not the highest price for a piece of plywood or in this case plastic!
    sorry for my bad english.
    greetings from Germany.

  6. Based on the classic Eames Chair design of the 1950s ergonimically moulded polypropylene seat shell available in 7 bright colours. The seat shell is supported by ash wood legs and black rods with protective plastic glides and as true to the original Eames DSW design as possible. eames pas cher

  7. I realised I bought lightweight replicas compared to sturdier ones from Sokol. My niece who is 4 falls off my bad replicas as they are too lightweight. Regretted buying off eBay from a home business at $62 each! $69 could of got me heavier weighted ones.

  8. All,
I agree that design should be for the people in its basic utilitarian approach. But consider when an artist or designer pours their heart and soul into something they love to then see their creation copied for the sake of profit.
When your'e looking to buy a designer piece like an Eames - sit in it and take in more than just the ergonomic comfort of what it provides. Think about the legacy of the design and the birth of a creation.
I understand this may sound a little intense but remove yourself from the idea of product as a commodity to it becoming a icon of sustainability - the way everything should be made or created (within reason).
Ask yourself the question: do I want a design replica that has little worth or would I prefer the real thing that will probably outlast me and the generations that follow.
Considering the cost difference between real and replica, save up a little more and get the real thing - you'll end valuing it even more.
    Hope this makes sense,
    Pete.

  9. I have always loved Eames furniture but could never afford it. I was sent to Manhattan Home Design by a friend. They have a lot of replicas. I bought the Eames lounger for $1000 and am totally satisfied.
